Researchers are invited to the next program of the Jewish Genealogical
Society of Los Angeles:

"Beyond the Manifest: Confirming One's Ancestral Origins Using
Alternative Sources" with Emily Garber

Monday, November 18th at 7:30PM
Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue
15739 Ventura Blvd. Encino

When several communities in Eastern Europe have similar names, which
often have been changed over the years, it may be difficult to
unambiguously identify one's family's shtetl of origin. Considering
the investment in time and energy in researching one's shtetl, it is
imperative to get it right. The genealogical proof standard requires
rigor in our research methodology. With its application and a
well-designed research plan, we assure that our findings are robust
and our conclusions not easily challenged. Emily Garber will discuss
how to improve your methodology, along with suggesting different
genealogical sources and creative searching techniques. In addition
to traditional methods, she'll cover other resources like
landsmanshaften burial data, online archival material, and the Shoah
Names database with the goal of providing tools and methods for
confirming the location of ones family shtetls and adding new records
to your family tree.

Emily Garber has been an active member of the Phoenix Jewish
Genealogical Society for several years, currently serves as one of the
moderators for the JewishGen Discussion Group and is the
communications director for Ukraine Special Interest Group.

The JGSLA Traveling Library will be available starting at 7:00PM -
Members free, guests $5.00. Refereshments served.
