[Wales] Welsh Newspapers Online #general

Jan Meisels Allen

Almost one year ago, March 2, 2013, I posted about The National Library of
Wales expecting to launch online one million pages of its historic newspaper
collection, called Welsh Newspapers Online -with the goal of eventually
digitizing 2 million pages. They are well on their way to achieving their
goal and as of February 2014 they have over 630,000 pages which represents
6.8 million articles >from almost 100 newspapers.

While Wales does not have a large Jewish population, I was surprised when I
tried the word "Jewish" and several "Jewish sounding" names in the search
engine for Welsh Newspapers Online with the thousands of hits that were
returned. The site is free. These included articles of people visiting the
country, deaths, weddings, bankruptcy proceedings and more. The papers
cover 1804-1919. Go to: http://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/en/home and fill
in the word or name in the search box.
