listings by initials in the Social Security Death Index #general

Renee Steinig

I thought my recent experience might be of interest...

I had reason to look up about 70 people in the Social Security Death
Index, all born in 1945-1947. I almost missed seven of them because
they were listed by their initials -- e.g. S. H. Bloom rather than
Steven H. Bloom, W. S. Kaplan instead of William S. Kaplan, etc. If I
hadn't already know their approximate birthdates, finding these common
names would have been quite a challenge. (So far as I can tell,
there's no way to do a wild card search for initials.)
