Nyasvizh, Belarus 75th Remembrance #belarus

Steve Stein

2016 marks the beginning of 75th Yahrtzeit observances for all those that
were murdered in the mass killings that began when Nazi Germany broke their
alliance with the Soviet Union in June 1941. The Einsatzgruppen, or mass
killing units, followed the advancing German army into what is now Belarus,
Ukraine, and other places, killing hundreds of thousands of Jews, usually in
collaboration with the local citizenry.

One such killing squad reached Nesvizh (now Nyasvizh) on October 30, 1941 (9
Cheshvan 5702), where they murdered approximately 5000 Jews, and confined
the remaining 600 or so Jews to the ghetto. Less than nine months later, on
July 21, 1942, when the Nazis planned to liquidate the ghetto, the remaining
residents conducted one of the first, if not THE first, of armed uprisings.
Most were killed and only a handful survived.

In commemoration of the anniversary of the First Aktion, an observance will
be held in Tel Aviv on 9 Cheshvan 5777 (evening of November 9, 2016). If you
will be in the Tel Aviv area, have a connection to Nesvizh, and are
interested in attending, please contact me privately and I will provide you
with the appropriate information.
