My great-grandfather was Samuel Joseph BERGER, born in 1854. He married
Zipora Annie SUBUTA (the spelling might be SABBATAI or SABUTTA), born in
1856, in Pultusk, Poland, in 1880--Annie's hometown. Samuel was the son
of Joshua BERGER and Henie Rose (I am not sure whether Rose is her maiden
name or her middle name).
I am told that Samuel was born in Grodno, in the Russian Empire, although
he may have been born in Poland. He and Annie immigrated in the 1880's to
the United States. Four of their five children were born in New York --
Mollie BERGER Dan (1884-1970), my grandmother; Hattie BERGER Goldberg
(1887-1953); Sherrell Lewis BERGER (1888-1928); and Avrome David BERGER
(1891-1923). The family moved to Memphis, where their fifth child, Dorothy
Vivian BERGER Goldberg (1898-1991) was born. Samuel died in 1926 and Annie
We do know that Henie Rose, who was born in 1834, immigrated to the United
States and died in 1904. However, I have not determined whether Joshua left
Europe. I also do not know whether Samuel had siblings, although if he did
they did not make the trip to Memphis.
I would like to find out if Joseph and Henie Rose lived in Grodno or
elsewhere and if Joseph remained in Europe. If anyone can help me with this
mystery, I would appreciate if they would contact me privately.
