Emily Garber

The Phoenix Jewish Genealogy Group will celebrate Chanukah with lunch
and learning on Sunday afternoon, December 6, 2015, >from 12:30-2:30
P.M. at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, 12701 N
Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ. Those interested in participating in
this meeting (which is free and open to all) are encouraged to provide
their own lunch (we will provide desserts) and listen to our invited
guest Janette Silverman, AncestryProGenealogists Senior Genealogist Research
Manager, who will speak on "Putting Yourself Into History."

"Putting Yourself Into History" The names and basic facts about our ancestors are
of course very important, perhaps the most important part of our research - where
did they live, what were they called, when did they live. But, is the extent of
what we learn about them a time line populated with dates and names or can it be
something more? How do we put flesh on our ancestors and understand something of
their lives and times?

In this presentation, Dr. Janette Silverman will discuss what she calls "the
personalization of history." Using examples >from her own research and her own
family, she will describe how to expand those dates and names into more than
numbers and letters. We will look at what we know about a person and the
"micro-history" of that family and explore the macro-history of the time in which
they lived, positioning our families within a more global framework.

Dr. Janette Silverman has been involved in Jewish genealogical
research for nearly 35 years. In August 2015 Janette joined
AncestryProGenealogists as a Senior Genealogist Research Manager in Salt Lake
City. She is a moderator for the JewishGen Discussion Group, Coordinator of
JewishGen's Ukraine SIG, the Lead Co-Chair of the International Association of
Jewish Genealogy Societies (IAJGS) 2016 conference in Seattle Washington and a
member of the IAJGS membership committee. Janette previously served as president of
the Phoenix Jewish Genealogy Society and teaches classes on Jewish Genealogy
Research. Her doctoral dissertation on Jewish genealogical research, was entitled
"In Living Memory". Additional information about Dr. Silverman and her research
can be found on her website, http://relativatree.com/. She currently divides her
time between her home in Phoenix and work in Salt Lake City.
