The speaker will describe his search for Miklos Reisman in cooperation with
Kathy Altman, first cousin of Miklos.
Miklos was the son of Jeno Reisman, the brother of Kathy's mother, and his
mother's maiden name was Ilona Stern. Miklos was born in Uzhgorod,
Czechoslovakia in 1937. The area was annexed to Hungary in 1938 and it is today
Jeno was drafted into the forced labor service for Jewish men and disappeared
on the Eastern Front. Ilona moved to Budapest in 1944. She was probably forced
into the infamous Eichmann March in November, 1944.
Kathy Altman began to search for Miklos in the 1990s. Ilona did survive and
returned to Budapest, but her tracks also disappeared. Ilona's brother, Martin
Stern, was living in Israel after the war.
Although the search has been inconclusive, it has produced numerous documents
which may be exploited toward establishing the identities and fates of many of
the children whose fate has not been recorded. There were probably thousands of
Jewish children who were taken to Israel, where many had changed their names
and some were too young to remember their lives during the war.
This presentation is made possible with the help of The Memorial Museum of
Hungarian Speaking Jewry in Safed, Israel
