Hello, Jewishgenners. We generally know that there is a custom among Ashkenazi Jews not to name children after living relatives. Sephardim do name after living relatives, although I know this practice did not exist among some Moroccan Jews.
Sorry David, you're not quite right. It's true that Eastern European Ashkenazim generally don't name after living relatives.
But Western European Ashkenazim don't follow this custom. Case in point - both my sister and myself, and many of our cousins were named after grandparents who were alive at the time. We are of Dutch Ashkenazi ancestry.
