Rebecca and father Israel SINGER - Warsaw and UK #general

David Ziants

My maternal great-grandmother through my grandfather was Rebecca nee
SINGER (married name GEWELBA) born approx. 1873 in Warsaw (or at least
lived in Warsaw before migrating to UK ~1900) and died in UK 1951 . >from
her gravestone, her father's Hebrew name was Yisrael (Israel).

I am trying to prove or substantiate that this g-g-grandfather Israel is
the same Israel ZINGIER which I found on Polish JRI indexing, born 12th
Jan 1839, and whose mother Rebecca (nee KLEIN) died in 1873, the same
year my g-grandmother was born and was thus named after her. In the
family that appears in JRI-Poland records, Israel was married to Tova,
his father was Baruch and grandfather Tzvi. That SINGER family was, at
least by what is written on Zvi's record, of Cohanic descent.

There actually seems to be a disproof that the SINGER family I mentioned
above is not mine, because if it was, then surely on my
great-grandmother's stone would be written "Rivka bat Yisrael HaCohen"
(Rebecca the daughter of Israel the Cohen) and it is not written that
she is a daughter of a Cohen. My family at that generation, >from what my
grandfather told me, were pretty steadfast in their religious practice
so I doubt that this important point would have been forgotten. Of
course the issue could resonate if Baruch or Israel was adopted and not
biological, in which case the JRI-Poland Israel is not a Cohen.

If anyone has any information or possible matches of either my Rebecca
or my Israel, or the names on JRI-Poland, I would be very happy to hear.
