Those two towns may be Aran, the Yiddish name for Varena in Lithuania,and Merecz,
the Polish name for Merkine. The two towns are about 20 miles apart.
(The Yiddish name for Merkine, Meretch, is similar in sound to the Polish name.)
Lithuania had been part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before
being absorbed by Russia, and many people used (and still use) the
term "Poland" to refer to entire area of the Commonwealth.
