I am hoping to discover as much of the social history of the period -- 1870

I recommend the book "The Wayfarers" by Stuart Tower. It is a
fictionalized account of the Fusgeyers that left Romania between 1900
and 1914, and gives insight into what life was like back home.

[I have no interest in the aforementioned book, other than being a satisfied
reader]
