Searching for towns in Yiddish per ancestors' pronunciation #general
redberliner@...
I just realized that when we are searching for towns, we may be searching for
the name in Yiddish as pronounced by our ancestors. Perhaps there is a way to translate the Yiddish name into Polish or Russian and then be able to find it. I don't know if Jewishgen.org has such a link or not. It seems it would be helpful to our researchers. My thoughts. In addition, each community page includes all known variations of town names in a variety of languages. https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/Search.asp You may search the communities Database >from the above URL; >from the JewishGen homepage http://www.jewishgen.org using the "Search for Town" box in the middle of the page; or by clicking the Databases tab on the homepage and, then, the third link down on the left side of the Databases page: "The JewishGen Communities Database."
