This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Jewish tradition holds that every generation has 36 saints (lamedvavnikim or
Tzadikim, meaning "hidden righteous ones") on whose piety the fate of the world
depends. The number 36 corresponds to the 6 days of creation, and the 30 days of
an average month. In a sketch of "Reb Zalman the Poor: An example of a repentant
sinner in Yampol", >from the Yizkor book of that town in the Ukraine, the editor
notes that many of the inhabitants believed this mysterious man was genuinely one
of the 36, perhaps, in part, because he spent so much time "of his time with the
sick and the wretched poor, helping to find medicine for them." Although he lived
in Yampol for 30 years, no one knew where he was from. When asked, he answered with
a laugh: ""Idiots! Why are you bothering your brains about where I come from, it
would be better to ask where I am going!" This is his story.
