JRI-Poland adds more Galicia Data to the Database #general

Mark Halpern

Hello Fellow Galitzianers:

Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and supporters, JRI-Poland
recently added record indices for ten towns in Galicia to our online
database at http://www.jri-poland.org/jriplweb.htm . All these records
are found at the AGAD Archive in Warsaw, Fond 300.

-- Boryslaw 1916-1925, 1927-1929, 1931-1936 marriages

-- Buczacz 1889-1894, 1896, 1898-1915, 1918-1929 marriages and 1917-1930
deaths. The Jewish vital records >from before World War I were destroyed
during the War. These civil marriage records >from 1889 through 1915 were
recreated at the request of the people, their families, or the courts.
Marriages >from 1918 through 1929 and deaths >from 1917 through 1930 were
registered contemporaneously.

-- Gwozdziec 1885, 1893-1895, 1899-1916, 1918-1936 marriages. The Jewish
vital records >from before World War I were destroyed during the War.
These civil marriage records >from 1885 through 1915 were recreated at
the request of the people, their families, or the courts. Marriages >from
1916 through 1936 were registered contemporaneously.

-- Kozlow 1905-1920 deaths

-- Lysiec 1924-1931 marriages. These are the first records in the
JRI-Poland database for this town.

-- Obertyn 1907-1916, 1918-1931 marriages and 1909-1927 deaths

-- Podwoloczyska 1914-1915, 1918-1921 marriages

-- Rohatyn 1899-1915, 1917-1935 deaths

-- Skalat 1902-1914, 1916-1935 marriages and 1915-1930 deaths

-- Touste 1924, 1927-1928, 1930-1932, 1934-1937 deaths. These are the
first records in the JRI-Poland database for this town.

With the addition of these records, there are now nearly one million
record indices included in the JRI-Poland online database for towns in
Eastern Galicia. This covers 100 towns now in Ukraine.

As many of you know, JRI-Poland has been linking our index entries to
the images of records that are placed online by the AGAD Archive. AGAD
has placed images online for all record registers with
Signature/Sygnatura through 3470. Image will soon be placed online for
all Sygnatura up though 4071. These image will cover birth records up
through 1917 and marriage/death records up through 1937. The AGAD
Inventory by Sygnatura can be found at
http://www.agad.gov.pl/inwentarze/Mojz300x.xml

For Sygnaturas with images that have been indexed by JRI-Poland, the
search results table will show a link in the far left column. If the
link reads "View Image," the link will take you directly to the page
containing that record. Linking directly to the record requires
volunteers who input the image-link to the file containing the index
entries. This team of volunteers is led by Howard Fink. We thank them
for their efforts. If you are interesting in helping with the linking
project, please contact me.

If the link reads "View Nearby Image," the direct linking input has not
yet been completed. However, JRI-Poland Database Manager Michael Tobias
has developed a mechanism to estimate the page where the record can be
found. In most cases, the link to the record will require the researcher
to move forward or backwards up to four pages to find the right record
number (AKTA). We thank Michael for his efforts.

Our indexing has now entered into the years of World War I and we are
seeing the impacts of the War on the vital record registrations in some
towns.

If you have any questions about these towns or the status of indexing
for any towns formerly in Galicia and now in Ukraine, please contact me
at mark@halpern.com.

Please remember, Galicia researchers should also be searching Gesher
Galicia's All Galicia Database http://search.geshergalicia.org/ . These
two databases have very little overlap.

Please join us at the Warsaw Conference next month. JRI-Poland will be a
major sponsor of the Conference. Our expert volunteers will be available
to help guide your research.
