Hi Genners,
Once again the usefulness of this discussion group has come through.
Even before the digest of the day had reached my inbox, Glenda Rubin
came through with an answer and David Barrett with one slightly more
detailed. So not to keep the rest of you in suspense:
N = Netherland
I = Israelitisch
S = Sick
F = Fund
This was a Burial Society for Dutch deceased American Jews, presumably
very similar to other landsmanschaften.
I had found the photo of the people of interest about a year ago, and
apparently didn't remember this week that it had been in JOWBR. After
getting Glenda's response, I checked JOWBR again, and noted they were
indeed buried in "Bayside Cemetery/Netherlands Society #1 (Gate 18),"
in Queens, NY (see family name PEREIRA, for Esther and Jacob).
However, I'm not sure at that time I would have made the now obvious
connection to the acronym without the help of Glenda and David!
Thanks to all,
Madeleine Isenberg
