Happy New Year to our friends in JRI-PL!
from the Board of Directors of JewishGen, our volunteers worldwide wewant to wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
We also want to extend our deep appreciation to all of you who have
supported JewishGen throughout the year with your time, your
creativity, your sharing of information and your financial support.
As we move closer and closer to the new millenium... JewishGen is
being driven by its mission and its commitment to the Jewish
community.. of "preserving our history for future generations".
To this end, JewishGen is launching a series of new projects in 1999,
including JewishGen ShtetlSchleppers, providing an opportunity for all
of us to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors and to document and
preserve information pertaining to our ancestral shtetls. We are very
pleased and proud of the team we are assembling, a professional team
of guides and researchers in every major country in Eastern Europe, as
well as a dynamic team of JewishGen volunteers who will be serving as
Group Leaders, assisting participants in their planning and research
prior to departure and who will be available on-site as JewishGen's
hosts. We are finalizing pricing as we speak... and will have further
details available within the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
If you have not visited the online ShtetlSchleppers site, please do...
and if you have an interest in participating be sure to complete the
form at the very end and get it back to us ASAP. Groups are being
formed and space is limited. >from the home page

ShtetlSchleppers will provide a unique opportunity to travel on
genealogical tours, visiting the
ancestral villages of our families, culminating in an activity no
other tour offers. Using the latest technology, JewishGen plans to
transfer all documents and information gathered into a single central
electronic storage, management and retrieval system which will be
accessible through the JewishGen web site. (http://www.jewishgen.org)
This is the single element that sets ShtetlSchleppers apart >from all
other tours. Our goal is to insure that Jewish lives, both past and
present, woven into the fabric of social and cultural history, rise
again >from the ashes of the destroyed communities you will be visiting
As this new year progresses and we "march" ever so quickly into the
new millenium, there will be no doubt about the role each of us will
have in combining our personal research with the preservation of our
history. It is going to take a concerted effort on all of our parts to
begin the "march", cooperatively and collectively, so together we will
greet the year 2000 with, as one JewishGen'r and survivor recently
wrote, "the most meaningful ex post facto forms of resistance to the
Nazi undertaking in the last twenty years."
To our family and friends around the world... we extend our best
wishes in welcoming in the New Year!
