All Suwalki area LDS records now indexed #poland

The mission of Jewish Records Indexing - Poland is to index all surviving
Jewish vital records of Poland, both those filmed by the LDS, and those in
the Polish State Archives (PSA) not filmed by the LDS

Indexing of records under the PSA project is done on an archive by archive
basis and a few years ago, JRI-Poland completed the work on all towns in the
Suwalki archives. The towns in the Suwalki project are somewhat unusual in
that the years filmed and the years not filmed are intertwined. As a result,
there are many gaps in the PSA data for most of the towns.

In view of this, JRI-Poland commissioned a private researcher in Poland to
create indices of all Jewish records >from Suwalki area towns in LDS
microfilms. Since the indexing was done directly >from the actual records,
the contract also called for the indices to include father's and mother's
names and mother's maiden name to help researchers identify their families
in the LDS microfilms.

The indexing of the microfilmed records for all Suwalki towns is now
complete and together with the data >from PSA project (non-microfilmed
records), researchers will have the most complete and accurate information
ever available for each town. While the PSA data is already online, the
data >from the microfilmed records can only be made available online after
the comprehensive indexing work has been funded.

To give researchers a perspective of the scope of this project, JRI-Poland
has created a master surname file that lists the number of times each
surname appears in each town - in both the LDS microfilmed records and
those un-filmed years previously indexed in the Suwalki PSA project.
This file is available as an Excel spreadsheet or in Adobe Acrobat PDF.

You can download the file at:
www.jri-poland.org/surnames/suwalki_lds_surn.xls

or:
http://www.jri-poland.org/surnames/suwalki_project_surnames.pdf

(Note: the Excel file is large and may take a little while to download.)

The fundraising project is underway, but you do not have to wait until the
indices for your town are funded in order to have access to the data.
Researchers making Qualifying Contributions will be eligible to obtain the
Excel file with the indices to their towns records in the LDS microfilms.
The Qualifying Contributions for each town are listed below. With the
Excel file, you will be able to sort by various fields, as well as to find
listings for family surnames in the town for which you may have forgotten
to search.

Contributions to "Jewish Records Indexing - Poland" may be made by check,
bank draft, money order, or Visa or MasterCard. The web site for the credit
card contribution form is www.jri-poland.org/visa.htm

Jewish Records Indexing - Poland, Inc. is an independent U.S.
non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions to JRI-Poland are
tax-deductible in the U.S. and Canada to the extent permitted by law.

Canadian contributors should use the form and follow the instructions at

Reminder: Being able to work with an Excel file with all the data - rather
than just doing online searches - has important advantages for researchers.
It is possible to sort and re-sort the entries in various ways to better
identify all members of a family, spot variations of surnames, hypothesize
on other families that may be related because of patterns of given names,
or notice other information that may not be obvious when searching online.
