Roni S. Liebowitz
This is a very special event. Former Belchatower
Harry Haft will be inducted into the National
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 29,
2007 at 10:30 AM at the Suffolk Y-JCC 74 Hauppauge
Road, Commack, NY 11725 Tel: 631-462-9800.
Harry Haft was only 16 when he was sent to the
concentration camps. He was forced to fight other
Jews in bare knuckle bouts for the entertainment
of S.S. officers. Ultimately, escaping the camp,
Harry traveled to America and became a pro boxer.
Harry now lives in Pembroke Pines, Florida. His
story of survival and his boxing career (he fought
Rocky Marciano in 1948), written by his son Alan,
has been published by Syracuse University Press.
