Although this is certainly not a precise calculation, I know that even
during the Great Depression, my father and his brother -- both living
in California -- used to send a check for $35 US every month to their
parents in Eishishok, which was part of Interwar Poland although today
it is in Lithuania.

A cousin later told me that amount was the equivalent of about 250 zloty,
which he said was the average monthly salary of a workman in the 1930s in
Eishishok.
