Thanks to JewishGen and JRI-Poland and a skilled researcher on Geni, I
have been able to find out a great deal about the descent of my husband's
maternal grandmother. However, the origins of her husband, Mosek
Menachem Mendel Goldwasser (Morris Goldwater), remain mysterious. In his
naturalisation application (London 1923) he gives his date of birth as
23 February 1867 (census ages suggest a date of birth of 1863) and lists
his parents as the late Abraham Goldwasser and the late Zilpa nee Frankel.
He "left Poland at the age of about 28". He further states that he was
born and educated in "Sochotzow [Sochaczew?] near Warsaw, Poland" and
was a "Dealer in pictures 1893 to 1894" (possibly in "Kovna" as that is
given as the birthplace of two of his children). He states that he had
"one sister last heard of in Poland not known in still alive"; we do not
know if he had other siblings who had died before his application in 1923.
(In a letter dated 25 June 1923 he states that he wishes "to go to Poland
to see my relatives".)
He married his wife Minnie (Minna Machla Binkowska) in Kolo in 1885.
Their children (born between 1887 and 1904) included Israel (Erwin),
Abram, Maryjem Zilpa (Mary), Chana Ruchla (Rosie), Jenny, Rebekah,
Phillip, Jacob (Jack), Freda and Abraham (Alf).
I would be very grateful for any advice on how to find out more about
Morris's origins in Poland.
