I am trying to locate the burial location for Wilhelm WACHTEL, the
outstanding Jewish artist with roots in Lviv, Ukraine.
He was born in (what was then) Lemberg in 1875 and "allegedly" died on
December, 30, 1942 in New York. I say "allegedly" because even though
Wikipedia (and other online sites, books, his bio, etc.) say that this
is when he died, possibly in an "accident," no burial place/cemetery
location has been provided in any sources I can find. (He died soon
after coming to the United States.)
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and by the 1920s he
was exhibiting his paintings in Vienna. Portrayed as a "child of the
Lemberg ghetto" he had painted scenes >from the "Jewish milieu," but
moved on to biblical characters and scenes of the hard life of early
settlers in Palestine.
A friend in Israel says her mother received a postcard >from Wachtel,
which arrived after the war. Was it a case of "lost in the mail" - or
discarded, then found and mailed post portem by someone else and
delivered post-mortem? Was the postcard a forgery?
I've checked most online sources, NYC death records (and JOWBR of
course) so I'm not looking for suggestions of where to search, but if
you know where he is buried please contact me privately, unless your
findings would be of research interest to the genealogical community.
