(Galicia-Poland) Jewish Cemeteries Being Cleaned by Southern Baptist Minister #poland

Jan Meisels Allen

Steven Reece is an ordained Southern Baptist Minister >from Texas who cleans
Jewish cemeteries and erects memorial plaques in Poland and Ukraine-the
former Europe Jewish heartland. He says as a Christian, it is his way of
honoring Holocaust victims while supporting the surviving Jewish
communities. He says he is troubled by the failure of European Christians
who mainly stood by passively as the Nazis persecuted and killed their
Jewish neighbors. He sees the Jewish cemetery as a way to bring Jew an
Christian together and work together. His organization, the Matzevah
Foundation, has carried out 28 projects in 14 different countries with
1,000 volunteers including Americans, Israelis and Poles.

He has cleaned cemeteries in Poland including in Oswiecim. He works with
diaspora Jews to work in Polish towns to continue the maintenance work. His
foundation brings volunteers to Europe >from the Brentwood Baptist Church in
Tennessee and partners them with Jewish descendants to care for their
ancestral cemeteries. He wants to help maintain the 1,000 Jewish cemeteries
across Poland

He is now working in the Ukraine and the recent work in Rohatyn was
organized by Marla Raucher Osborn, who serves on the Gesher Galicia Advisory
Board, and the Jewish Rohatyn Heritage.
