Beryl Baleson asked if the shtetl "Neustadt" or similar sounding is in
Lithuania, or Latvia. There are many Neustadts wherever German was spoken
(Neustadt= New city, or new town). Using JewishGen's "Search this website"
feature - the link in the home page taking you to
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/Search.htm

you can find a ShtetLinks Page for this Lithuanian Neustadt, 157 kilometers
(97 miles) West of Vilnius (Vilna) and about 10 miles NW of Vilkaviskis,
very close to Lithuania's West border.

Naishtot, Lithuania (Kudirkos-Naumiestis)
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Naishtot/naishtot.html

It was known as Wladyslawow while Polish.

A search in the JewishGen Discussion Group Archives
http://www.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.isa?jg~jgsys~archpop
for Neustadt gives 115 hits, including at least also German Neustadts and a
4 mail exchange in mid June 2001 starting re. "Neustadt clarification"
referred to today's Kudirkos Naumiestis.

I am not checking for the existence of Latvian Neustadts, so I am not ruling it / them (?) out...

Hope this helps!
