Although I do not know about a custom in in 1897, I can tell you that it is
not uncommon, even today, to name boys after great Torah leaders who are not family members. So it would not be a stretch to consider that your family member would have been named for the Gaon without a family relationship.

(I, on the other hand, am named for the Gaon, who was my great uncle, seven
generations removed.)
