Where are all the Varnaians?
Were any of your ancestors >from Varniai (Vorne in Yiddish)?Varniai is a very small, picturesque town in the Telsiai district of Western Lithuania. In the Jewish world, the town was well known for its scholars many of whom were educated in the town’s own yeshiva. It was home to the charitable Rabbi Chanania. There were many emigrants in the nineteenth century >from Varniai to Ireland, Australia, South Africa, England and the USA. If you are a descendent of one of these, you might be very interested the translations project. There are 9000 records in the Lithuanian archives relating to Jewish families in Varniai which are waiting to be translated. However, we need to pay for the services of translators and would appreciate any contribution to the project. The LitvakSIG Vital Records Translation Project website is at http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeol99x There is a Downloads page where you can access a donor form if you are interested in contributing. Sincerely, Susan Cooper suzecooper@yahoo.com.au Shtetl Coordinator, LitvakSIG Varniai Vital Records.
