My grandfather and his wife arrived >from Lithuania with his in-laws as a group and settled in the East End in 1875. I assumed that it was because both my grandfather and his brother-in-law were 19 and due for conscription into the Russian army (for 25 years!). I so admire their bravery and hard work.
