On November 14, 2017, the Mayor of Bielsk Podlaski unveiled a new sign
proclaiming: "Plac Pamieci Zydow Bielskich" which translates to
"Square of Remembrance: Jews of Bielsk". It has a central location
in front of the municipal swimming pool/water park/spa on a site
previously occupied by Shaare Zion synagogue and adjacent to a
former mikveh and Jewish school. The date was chosen to commemorate
the 75th anniversary of the deportation of Bielsk's Jewish community
to Treblinka which occurred on November 2 - 11, 1942.

The new sign is located immediately adjacent to an outdoor display
board featuring a illustrated history of the Bielsk Jewish community
in Polish and English. It was erected in 2010 by Bielsk historians
Wojciech Kononczuk and Doroteusz Fionik and others to showcase the
town's Jewish legacy to Bielsk residents.

In related news, the historians' multi-year project to translate
the Bielsk Yizkor book entirely into Polish is nearing completion
and will provide first-hand historical accounts for use in lessons
with Bielsk students.
