It might help to be clearer about the function of the witness. This is obscure in most records I have examined, but some records will say explicitly something like: "X came to see me and told me of the birth of his son Khaim Yankel." The witness was not a witness to the birth. The witness is certifying that the recorder has faithfully recorded what X told him.
