Jo Ann Goldwater

To anyone who will be in the area of Sarasota Florida, on Thursday Jan.
7th 2 PM

You are invited to attend my lecture, "How a trip to Lithuania and
Latvia led to discoveries of a Jewish Presence Past and Present in these

One of the highlights of my trip was Vilnius (Vilna), the home of the
revered Talmudic scholar, the Vilna Gaon in the 18th century. In
the 19th century the city went on to become the home of Haskalah, or
Jewish Enlightenment, and it was known as the Jerusalem of the North.
Lithuania became the centre of Jewish learning. In fact, some people
consider Litvaks to be the most learned of the Jewish people. Are
Lithuanian Jews different? This lecture will be illustrated with photos
from my first trip to Lithuania in 2009.
It will be held at the Miniversity at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles
Road, Longboat Key, FL. Everyone is welcome. There is a $10 charge if
you are not a member of TBI.

I hope to see you there.
