Adoption of wife's surname on marriage #lithuania

Jeremy Schuman

My ancestor Itsko SHUVAL (bc 1799) appears in the KOVNO (KAUNAS)
records >from 1851 onwards, although I can find no trace of him
prior to that. His wife was called Rokhel Shuval, and I suspect
that she may have been a member of the large Shuval family which
had been living in Kaunas since 1812. If that theory is correct,
then presumably Itsko took on the surname Shuval when he married
Rokhel (in about 1825). Has anyone ever come across a similar
case of a man adopting his wife's surname on marriage in early
19th century Lithuania?

Many thanks,
