Chaim Shalom #poland #lodz

Philip Freidenreich

The name Chaim in a double name is often a special
case. There is a custom to change a person's name
when that person becomes gravely ill. The thought is
that the Angel of Death will not be able to locate the
person because of the change in name. Chaim, which
means "life", is often the added name of choice.
Therefore, one must look at the original birth record
to determine whether the Chaim is original or added
later.
