Ahlem Labor Camp #poland #lodz

Dear Researchers,

A very moving and exciting documentary is being produced for the public
television network, PBS. Called "Angel of Ahlem", it is about an American
soldier >from Iowa, Vernon Tott, who helped liberate a labor camp in Ahlem,
just outside Hanover, Germany. By chance, he happened to have a pocket
camera with him, took 18 photographs of the survivors, sent them home, put
them in a shoebox in his basement, and forgot about them for almost 50 years
ago. And then one day he read a notice in a military newsletter asking if
anyone knew the whereabouts of the young soldier who took pictures the day
Ahlem was liberated. He realized he was the one, located the photographs,
and contacted the Jewish survivor who had written the letter. It turns out
all the Jews at Ahlem were >from Lodz, Poland. They had been in the Lodz
Ghetto, deported to Auschwitz, and >from there to the labor camp in Hanover,
Germany. This ex-soldier, almost 80 years old and in failing health, has
made it his life's mission to locate as many survivors as possible, share
with them the photos he made, and lecture school children on the horrors of
the Holocaust. This past November he was honored at the National Holocaust
Museum. He traveled to Hanover recently for a ceremony honoring him and a
number of the survivors. The crew was there to film the events, and then on
May 6 left for Lodz for two days to film the ghetto area, Jewish cemetery,
and other aspects of Jewish life in the Lodz area. They plan to attend the
Commemoration of the Liquidation of the Lodz Ghetto at the end of August
with some survivors and trace their roots.

These photos have been put on a website in the hopes that you will be able
to identify the people in the pictures. Please take a look at
http://www.jou.ufl.edu/documentary/prod/Ahlem/album/default.asp. To learn
more about this story, do an internet search on Ahlem Labor Camp.

If you know of anyone who might have also been in this labor camp, please
share the photographs with him.

Thank you!
Roni
