I have received several inquiries about the information I posted regarding
Lodz (and other) databases. Hope this clarifies:
1. The databases are searchable databases, not static lists. You cannot
browse the entire town or whole list. You must do a search on a surname.
2. On the Holocaust database, one surname search will list that name
wherever it appears in any of the 100 separate data files, so you don't have
to go through each file separately. You cannot search one datafile
independently. These relatively smaller databases do not have their own
individual search engines as does the Lodz Ghetto Residents database at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Poland/LodzGhetto.html . You will need
to search these other databases by going to
3. It is very important to READ THE INTRODUCTIONS and check out the
highlighted terms, which often refer you to lists of occupations or a
translation of terms and even the columns used in the databases. It is very
hard to understand the content of the database without reading the intro.
For information on each of the databases, scroll down and click on the links
on that same page. For example, Chelmno is one of the databases listed.
Click on that link to get to the explanation about the database at
4. Anyone can do a basic search but must have a JewishGen ID number. To get
this sign up at http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ (no cost). When the request
appears to log onto a database, you will need that number. A basic search
allows you to input only in the first search box. Only contributors can do
an advanced search which allows you to search additional boxes at the same
time so that, for example, you can search on a surname and given name
Another searchable database, not housed on JewishGen, containing about
20,000 Lodz names was compiled by Daniel Kazez. Check out
Please remember to list the ancestors you are researching on the JewishGen
Family Finder http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ If you are listed, others
researching the same names, or who have information about the names you are
researching, will be able to contact you.
Good luck with your research.
