My mother said that *her* mother (born 1879) told her, "My mother
had a business, and my father was a scholar." Does that mean that
he was a rabbi? If not, was there a term for men who spent their
adult married years simply "studying"? And was this studying as we
know it, or did the term mean that they would counsel and teach?
Thanks for your ideas.
