I probably read the book more than ten years ago. >from what I recall,
I found Zuckerman's arguments concerning the identification of Machir
with Guillaume d'Orange of the Chansons de Guillaume to be interesting
but less than convincing, which I expect was more troubling to
historians. However, the parallels that he drew between our knowledge
of Natronai and Machir made the identification of the two seem quite
plausible. I can't say for sure, but I doubt this aspect of his
thesis troubled historians.
