Subject: Geographical changes in Jewish population in rural settlements in
Szolnok-Doboka county between 1891 - 1930
In the Yiskor book of Dej I find statistical information about the size of
Jewish population in 304 settlements in Szolnok-Doboka county around Dej for
the years 1857 - 1946. (pp 178 - 186).
There are a few interesting points I don't know to explain:
1. There is a great fall in numbers , sometimes even disappearing, of Jews
in the villages between 1891-1930. Only in 38 out of 304 settlements there
is still Jewish population living in 1930,but in much less numbers.
2. There is a significant growth in numbers of Jews in the greater towns and
cities: Nagyilonda grew in 280%, Dej in 300%, Magyarlapos in 61% ,
Szamosujvar in 500%.
3. The whole county, also, lost nearly third of its jewish population from
9579 in 1891 to 6924 in 1930.
I read in some place that till the end of the 19th centuary Jews were not
allowed to settle in cities ( in Dej for example), Is there any connection to
this great immigration >from rural Szolnok-Doboka to the urban settlements at
the beginning of the 20th century? Or maybe its all because of lack of
Is there any book or article that I can read about these demographic changes
of the period ?
