Meaning of "rentier" in 1890s Bucharest #romania

Bob Friedman

I am trying to understand what Bucharest city directories >from the 1890s mean
by the term "rentier," which is seemingly used as an occupation. The main
interpretation suggested by Google Translate is
"annuitant," i.e., someone who is collecting an annuity, which I imagine would
be similar to a "pensioner" or "retiree." An alternate suggestion is
"independent gentleman," which sounds like it might be a property owner who
collects rents.

Anyone have a definitive answer?
