Hello,
My family came in 1900 and 1903 traveling that exact route >from Belarus. I am
assuming it was cheaper that way. My grandmother traveled with five children in
1903 and they came in late December which must have been still cheaper. They
were brave people.

Can anyone explain (or offer a theory) why a Romanian Jewish immigrant com=

from Europe in 1903, whose final destination was New York City or

Pittsburgh, would disembark at the port of St. John in New Brunswick,
Canada, then travel overland through Quebec and enter the United
States at St. Albans, Vermont?

What could that strange route be about? Why not go straight to Ellis
Island? Was this an issue of money, paperwork, or perhaps something
else? If it helps, the ship was the Lake Megantic, which I am
guessing sailed >from Liverpool though I am not sure.
