The Turkish Community in Vienna #sephardic

Dear all,

I just read a fascinating message sent to the JewishGen Discussion Group,by
Celia Male (UK) about the so called "Turkish Community of Vienna".
With Celia's permission I am hereby copying the message to which I'll answer
separately.
------
There was an on old-established Sephardic community in Vienna; indeed the
Sultan of Turkey had negotiated for some of his citizens to live in Vienna
and this meant Ottoman Jews could settle there before 1848. Ironically, Jews
from other areas of the Habsburg Empire were not allowed to settle in Vienna till
well after 1848, when the influxes >from Bohemia, Moravia, Hungary, Galicia
etc began.

I have always been interested in the Sephardic community in Vienna but have
not done any work on it. I am familiar with many of the names >from my childhood
in Alexandria, Egypt [nb the CHEMTOB grave >from Cairo but I have never found
the family]. I keep passing these graves in the huge Zentral Friedhof, Vienna
Tor 1 and Tor IV [Tor means *Gate* and Tor IV is the newer section] and here are
justa very few of them to whet your appetite [see footnote for names]. There are
many, many more. A lot of the graves >from Tor IV Group 9 appear to be from
Bulgaria. Please note the French inscriptions on some of the graves.

I apologise for the poor quality of some pictures but at the time I was a
beginner. I hope to add to this website when I next go to the Zentral
Friedhof, assuming it is not raining, snowing and dark!

The ELIAS grave in Tor 1 is really amazing [only a glimpse can be seen here]
and next to it in Group 52A are many older Sephardic graves [there is an
ADUTT cluster here, plus FARCHY, BENVENISTI, ALBAHRY and many others too!]

You can also choose a slideshow and click the *I* in the middle of the page
to get the comments. I hope you will find them interesting and perhaps someone
will find a link to a long-lost family member.

Footnote: Names to be seen here are - ABA ALBACHARY ARDITTI BEHAR
BENMAYOR BENSUSSAN BENVENISTE CANETTI CAPPON CHEMTOB COHEN
FARCHY MERKADIC MITRANY NISSIM PAPO RUFANA SABETAY SALOM SAPORTA
SOTTO SARFATI VENTURA
