JOWBR and Memorial Plaque Updates #sephardic

Nolan Altman

Due to the unexpected arrival of Superstorm/Hurricane/Tropical Storm/All
Around Pain-in-the-Tuchas Sandy, the next update to JewishGen's JOWBR
(JewishGen's Online Worldwide Burial Registry) Database
(http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/) will be pushed back to
January and we will try to include all submissions made through the end of
the year. Due to 4 lost weeks at the East Coast JewishGen satellite office
in Oceanside, my house, we have a backlog of work and will try to get done
as much as possible for January. (Per JOWBR's requirements, submissions
should include complete cemeteries or cemetery sections, not individual
family burial information.)

If we can't get our submissions online in January, fear not! The next
update will be our usual pre-conference update that will incorporate all
submissions made through May 2013 for a June 2013 update. So, keep
photographing and indexing all spring!

JOWBR currently contains over 1.8 million Jewish burial records >from 65
countries. The database grows through the efforts of our donors; Jewish
Genealogical Societies, individuals, historical societies, cemetery
administrators, synagogues and Chevra Kadishas. If you are aware of
cemetery records that are not currently in our database, we would appreciate
if you could help us obtain them and help grow the database.

If you're interested in making a submission, please see "Submitting Data to
JOWBR" at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Submit.htm If you
prefer, you can also watch our online screencasts that show you how JOWBR
works and will also walk you through the completion of the standard
templates at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Screencasts/

An what about the Memorial Plaque project? Not a day goes by, other than
last Thursday, that I'm not stopped on the street by a member of a JGS or
historical society asking, "What can we do to help the greater genealogical
community?" Unlike JOWBR, the Memorial Plaque Project is a perfect project
that can be worked on at home and at any time of the day or night. The JGS
of Greater Boston is doing a wonderful job of indexing memorial plaques from
synagogues in the Boston area. The next update will be made at the same
time the JOWBR pre-conference update is made. Please see
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Memorial/ for more information.

you in advance for your help!
