South African Communist Party veteran Arnold SELBY has died in Berlin,
Germany, after a short illness. He was 83.

SELBY joined the party in the early 1940s when he was secretary general of
the Textile Workers' Union and later worked for the New Age newspaper
alongside Ruth FIRST. He fought in the South African Army in World War 2.

In 1953 SELBY was banned under the Suppression of Communism Act and in 1960
left South Africa to live in Ghana, where he worked in the trade union
movement. >from 1961 until 1964 he was a lecturer at the East German trade
union college and >from 1964 to 1984 was the editor of the Africa section of
Berlin International radio.

SELBY is survived by his wife Jeanette, step-daughter, Lorna, and a
grandson, Albert. - Sapa
