This is most certainly an English transliteration of the Afrikaans word BURGHERSKAP. It does indeed mean citizenship. A burgher is a citizen hence the suffix ' -burg' meaning city eg Johannesburg, Hamburg. Interestingly enough the Random House Websters College Dictionary defines burghership as the wealthy middle class citizens, the bourgeoisie. Kelvyn
