First Jew buried in Beaufort West was Sundel Senier, in 1881. The
article also notes Siegmund Harpner, “a private official and Lieutenant
in the Austrian Landwehr”, born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1865, he was
killed in a railway accident at Grootfontein in 1896. the reference is
to South African Jewish Times, June 6, 1947.

The Senior family is one of the known Litvak families of Sephardi origin.
