Slotar family #southafrica
A few days ago we posted a photo on viewmate of a Wakkerstroom wedding
given to SAJBD Archives by one Sheila Slotar.
In the course of looking for more Slotar details Elona at the Country
communities project of Bet Hatefusot was given these details by Naomi,
the archivist at the board.
"Naomi has interesting newscuttings about Eileen Slotar, but nothing
about Sheila Slotar who gave the photo to the SAJBD Archives.
This is what I have gleaned >from the newscuttings. [SA Jewish Times 21
October 1966 and 28 October 1966]
Eileen Slotar's father was Philip BlOCK. He came >from Akmian, Russia
c1899? and joined the Boer forces when he was 16 years old. He was
made a burgher of the South African Republic. David Saks (author of
Boerejode) did not have any information about him. So I have given him
a copy of that particular newscutting.
They lived for a brief period in one of the country towns - IT IS NOT
STATED WHICH ONE!
Eileen Slotar lived in Birdhaven in the 1960s. She was Hon Treas of
the Dunkeld Branch of the South African Jewish War Appeal in the 1940s
and a member of the UJW for many years and chairman of UJW in the 1960s."
We are still looking for definitive information about this wedding
photo, circa 1900, that the Country Communities
Project of the SA Friends of Beth Hatefusot are trying to identify. It
is on ViewMate at the following address:
