My father's four sisters tried without success to elicit >from their
immigrant father any information beyond the name of the town where he
originated. He consistently replied with an immigrant's version of "that
was then, this is now." He did not want to talk about life there or even
more distant family who did not emigrate. His mission here was to become an
American and pretend it was always thus, never realizing just how thick an
accent he had!
Perhaps if he had lived a normal life span (he died in his late 50s) he
might have mellowed some. Lack of information in this case is not because
he did not have an interested audience.
