Hard "G" in Cyrillic #ukraine
Beryl Blickstein <beryl@...>
Actually, there is a "G" in the Cyrillic alphabet, and it is pronounced
as a "G" in Russian. It is, however, pronounced as "H" in Ukrainian and
Byelorussian.
Unfortunately, as a result, my Grandmother's surname of GITLER was
pronounced as "Hitler" in her home town of Kamenets-Podolsk, Ukraine.

Sonya, Nathan and others,
Is it possible that Chortkov is actually Horochov? That's a shtetl in
Volynhia on the Bug River, southeast of Brest. Sometimes it's spelled
Gorochov, since there really is no H in Russian.
