Re: Ellis Island databases #ukraine

As Norm Solat pointed out in his Aug.14, /02 message there are many
problems finding ancestors at the LDS Ellis Island site, Jewishgenners should
try Steve Morse site at

http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html

Morse's site is much more flexible. However, it doesn't solve all
difficulties. I needed help in finding my BELKOWSKYS even though I knew the
year and approximate month in which they came to the US. Another
Jewishgenner, Rachel Leaf Berliner found them for me by fooling around more
than I had. It turned out that the surname "BELKOWSKY "had been spelled by
the transcriber as "BELKONISKY." Also, the transcriber had spelled my
grandfather's given name as "Tsidore" instead of "Isidor." The actual
manifest spelling and handwriting of both names was quite clear, so I can't
understand the transcriber's errors.

I will never understand why his profession was noted on the manifest as
"merchant" when in fact he was a doctor of medicine with degrees >from schools
and universities in Switzerland!
