The Meaning of BOF Groups #ukraine

Somewhere along the way, the purpose and objectives of BOF groups have
been misconstrued.

Birds of a Feather (BOF) were groups originally encouraged by hosts of the
International Jewish genealogical conferences held each summer. These
relatively informal meetings, would provide an opportunity for attendees to
discuss topics of common interest that were not already on the agenda of the
conference. I can recall chairing one at a past conference in Washington, DC
involving the Yizkor Book SIG when it was just forming. Other BOF meetings
usually involved discussions of specific shtetlach or areas of research.
Many
of these groups have now matured into SIGs or projects either under the
JewishGen umbrella or under the auspices of the IAJGS.

BOF groups were not primarily for groups of people researching the same
surnames. This is usually a function the many excellent SIGs and projects,
which are currently available via JewishGen. In addition, matching surnames
is
what the JGFF and FTJP are all about.
