BREST JEWISH COMMUNITY, RESEARCH PROJECT IN THE MINSK ARCHIVES FOR
OFFICIAL METRIC BOOK BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH RECORDS, 1895 - 1914 (but not every year complete)". Although these records are for the Shtetl of Brest-Litovsk, many Ukraine citizens >from the neighboring Shtetl were married in Brest-Litovsk. There are over 15 Ukraine Shtetl that were within 30 miles of Brest-Litovsk. Some of them are: LESHNITSA, LES'NITSA, VELIKORITA, VEL'KORYTA, VEL'KORYTO, WIELKORYTA DOROPEYEVICHE, DOROPEYEVICHI, SENISHCHE, DOBRISOVO, DOBROSOVO ZABLOTSE, ZABOLOT'YE, OSAVA, OSOVA We have added a web page to the Brest, Belarus web site that shows a sample of two (2) Russian language Metric Book pages that were photo copied during the December 2003 research done by Green Castle. One page is of my father's (Jankel BINENBAUM) birth record the other of my uncle's (Gutman BINENBAUM) birth record. Both are very easy to read and were easy to have translated. To see these sample documents you can go to the web site at: http://brestlitovsk.topcities.com/Home.html then hyperlink to the NEW page "Minsk Archive, 2003 Dec." At the bottom of this web page there is also a photograph (e-mailed by Jenni Buch and posted at JewishGen) taken by an unnamed researcher. This researcher describes the condition of the Metric Books in the Minsk Archives. There is also a statement by another researcher that expresses a different opinion of the quality of the documents. In my opinion, both are right in some observations and both are wrong in other observations. Larry Schenker (BINENBAUM) OWNER/MODERATOR Yahoo!
