Dear Avrumi, toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I do not know of any town by that name... exactly. There is, however, a
place that could be the city you are looking for.
My maternal grandmother (my mother's mother) and great grandmother (her
mother) were born in the tiny little village of Dereshova (called Deresheva
here on JewishGen). This village is about 176 miles southwest of Kyiv or
about 70 miles southwest of the regional capital of Vinnitsa. My great
grandmother was one of three sisters born in this town and her two sisters
both married gentlemen >from the nearby town of Verbovetz. Verbovetz less
than a 10 minute drive >from Dereshova which means that our ancestors could
have easily walked this distance or used a horse-drawn wagon to get there.
The thing that leads me to believe that this could be the city you are
looking for is that Verbovetz is about 37 miles north of Sokiryani. There is
a town called Khotyn about 45 miles southwest of Verbovetz just across the
border of what was then called Bessarabia (now Moldova).
My wife and I were in Dereshova this past summer 2008 and even though we did
not go into Verbovetz proper, I do have a picture of the sign for the city
and a distant shot of the valley where it lies.
This information is strictly conjecture and I offer it only as my opinion
and it is worth exactly what it cost you!
Good luck in your search,
